EPA chief says fracking regulations don't have to be federal

NJ.com -- States are right to take the lead on the issue of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the natural gas technology that some environmentalists accuse of polluting groundwater, said Environmental Protection Agency head Lisa Jackson today at an event at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

Asked what the odds were that fracking can comply with environmental law, Jackson laughed and joked about nearby gambling hub Atlantic City.

“They’re good. You can bet on that,” Jackson said. “I believe fracking as a technology is perfectly capable of being clean. But it requires people who are doing it and the innovators who create technology to make sure it be done right.”

She said regulation of fracking doesn’t necessarily need to be federal,

The EPA surely won't be leading any parades.
What a waste of taxpayer dollars. We don't need them. Eliminate the whole department.

Glad you liked it NHL!

Yes Honda, that was the original intent of the EPA. Problem has become it has become a hammer for an out of control progressive agenda and wielded against the will of the people in many instances.

Wonderful comment waynemustang. Sign this man up for the Flat Earth Society quick.

The current head of the EPA is a WOMAN, Ms. Lisa Jackson. Please at least try to read a couple paragraphs before inserting foot.

Thanks finally for one informative real news article docp..

Just do the fracking carefully and ethically. If businesses adhere to that, then we all gain.

What, the EPA is not going to block fracking? That is because Obama is a puppet of Mr. Buffett and wants natural gas production.

“I'm still not sure about this fracting [sic] stuff...I don't think I'm smart enough to know whether it's good or bad or safe or not.”

You do not have to be too smart to know that pumping toxic chemicals into the ground is a risky proposition. If industry can modify the fracking fluid to avoid the toxics, then I will be in favor of doing it. Not before.

Although I believe it is best for the states to make their own decisions on most all matters, I also believe that we should be able to vote on issues rather than big government as the EPA. Who better to decide environmental issues than the people who actually live in that environment and know it best!

No problem. Obama and his comrades have demonstrated, we only need to follow the laws we like and only adhere to the parts of the constitution we agree with. So with the precedents the Big O has set, the Feds and the EPA can go play tiddlywinks.

Funny - upstate NY is arguably one of the regions most in need of jobs - and yet their state is not allowing fracking - meanwhile, PA allows it and has a better job market.

What she said is that it is not being done right at this time and is not clean but possibly could be if the technology was developed and the rules enforced locally.

The States should be the source of such regulation. It is not an interstate commerce issue and belongs with the state not federal government. Uniform regulations would be nice but it still does not need federal involvement.
