EPA chief says fracking regulations don't have to be federal

NJ.com -- States are right to take the lead on the issue of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the natural gas technology that some environmentalists accuse of polluting groundwater, said Environmental Protection Agency head Lisa Jackson today at an event at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

Asked what the odds were that fracking can comply with environmental law, Jackson laughed and joked about nearby gambling hub Atlantic City.

“They’re good. You can bet on that,” Jackson said. “I believe fracking as a technology is perfectly capable of being clean. But it requires people who are doing it and the innovators who create technology to make sure it be done right.”

She said regulation of fracking doesn’t necessarily need to be federal,

If industry can modify the fracking fluid to avoid the toxics, then I will be in favor of doing it. Not before.

Who better to decide environmental issues than the people who actually live in that environment and know it best!

It is not an interstate commerce issue and belongs with the state not federal government. Uniform regulations would be nice but it still does not need federal involvement.
