I've always followed what the manufacturer recommended, and for the last few vehicles, that has been regular. If I bought a car that "required" something other than regular, and in this easy-to-locate informational stage that our world is in, I'd probably educate myself as to the reasons that it required something other than regular, and purchase accordingly.

I use reg most of the time. I do notice a difference in my gas mileage bewteen Arco regular and Cheveron/Shell regular.

the sadder part is that the high diesel cost (no justification for that since diesel is the first product to leave the fracking column at the refinery) costs EVERYone - all our products are transported at some point via trucks, which run on diesel.
Diesel should be 30 - 50 cents cheaper than what it is now and the economy would be getting back on track a lot faster.

never bought a car that needed premium. In fact, my Jetta came with recommendations of buying 89, but then, the dealer said, for the South, it's recommended to use 87 (which I was going to do anyways).

You've got to be kidding. It's 50 cents to a dollar more per fill.
Of course I've heard that some just use premium because they want to.
If the car doesn't call for premium, you might be wreaking your car, and if the car does call for premium and you don't use it you'll be causing it to not run right.
Why don't you guys drive 5 miles out of your way to find gas at 3 cents cheaper!!

with premium being 20 and up to 40 cents more a gallon, it's not hard to see why people go for the lower grades. especially for vehicles with larger tanks. however it does cause issues with some performance engines and the repair would cost a lost more than what is saved in the fuel prices.

My owners manual says I need to use 87 octane. I found that 85 works just as well and is cheaper, although I don't know any station in the area that sells 85.
I did an experiment a few years ago where I ran higher octane gas. I believe that I got roughly 2% better gas milage with 89 octane than 87 (probably smaller than my margin of error), but since 89 costs more than 2% more than 87 it was never worth buying. When gas is more than $5 per gallon, it might be worth looking into again, but never before then.

It is amazing to me that there are people who still think putting higher grade gas in their car gives it more power. If your car only needs 87 then it is not going to gain a thing from 89, 91 or 93.

It takes 87, the problem is they don't make it any more, what they are selling has 10% Ethanol, and that get me 10% less mileage.

Using the wrong(higher)octane fuel caused a lot of problems for GM vehicles in the late '90s and early 2000s, especially with the EGR system.

So if midgrade and premium are just sitting there in the ground unsold, does that mean the fuel goes stale after a few months? How do gas stations keep the fuel fresh?

A lot of people tend to think buying higher octane gasoline will either make the car go farther in the long run or makes it run better or both. The recommended octane for the car is what you should put in because anything higher is just a waste of money. You wont get any more performance. The gas goes into the combustion chamber and needs to be a certain minimum octane before it will go. In fact, putting higher octane than recommended can possibly cause minor damage.

My engine was made to run on diesel, not lsd or ulsd but they are the only options now thanks to government regulations.

In the old day you could get enough lead to run one tank of regular and then a tank of premium without having any knock issues. The problem today is the engine will sense the knock and auto retard the timing, you never hear it on regular.

I don't think the fact that more motorist switch to regular in tough times means they are ignoring the manufactures recommendation to use premium. Since most newer engines have a shorter stroke, turn more revs & only require regular, I believe they are just using premium when they had more money, mistakenly thinking it was better. It's no better than regular for your vehicle, if it only calls for regular. if it says you can use either then you will have to see which works best for you.

I have a 2006 Toyota Avalon that burns regular but its performance is better with premium per the owners manual. I have checked the fuel mileage over 20,000 miles and have found that the in town gas miliage is about 10% better with premium where as on the highway it is more like 5%. Regular runs about $2.79 and premium $2.99 which is about 7.5% more. Thus I am not only saving 2.5% using premium over regular, but I am getting the benefit of better performance while driving in town. Bottom line is that if your car can use premium and also regular, you might be better off paying a few cents more the better grade of fuel. So check it out.....

If the engine in your car is high compression then you will need a slower burning high octane fuel to prevent pre ignition.

I have always been told that your engine will talk to you and let you know if you need a higher grade of fuel. It does that by pinging if grade of fuel is too low.
OTOH, that does not say what biofuels with ethanol will do to ruin an engine does it? Does not help them one bit in my humble opinion.
